Glasgow games for Megan
By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year Megan Craig has been confirmed in the New Zealand squash team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this July and August. Megan, the second-highest ranked New Zealand women's player, will play in the singles event at the Games, and the doubles event with Kylie Lindsay, of Waikato. There is an eight-person New Zealand team heading to the Games, with four men and four women selected. The team was announced on Tuesday.
Megan's mum Julia was delighted with her daughter's achievement. "I'm obviously stoked and very proud. It's been a lifelong dream really. "She had the opportunity to go to Australia because they have better funding, but Megan said she couldn't imagine herself wearing green. She always wanted to wear the black and white." Megan, ranked 42 in the world, is currently in Australia, competing at the City of Perth WA Open as top seed. Last weekend she won her fifth WSA title in Alice Springs.

By Kristy Martin Students wearing pink shirts to school today are out to prove they won’t tolerate bullying. Pink Shirt Day, an international event held on May 23, is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating people’s differences and promoting positive relationships. The day encourages people to talk about bullying and take action against it. Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007. A group of Nova Scotia students decided to defend a kid who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In a show of solidarity, many of his peers turned up to school the next day wearing pink shirts, and Pink Shirt Day was born. Students from Marlborough Boys’ College and Marlborough Girls’ College will wear pink today, as will those at Bohally and Marlborough Community College. A pink shirt rally will be held at Lansdowne Park at 4pm.
Colourful ice cream truck on the road By Adam Poulopoulos What do a Blenheim mother and Harry Potter star Rupert Grint have in common? Answer: both own their own ice cream truck. Robyn Shannon has been driving her new ride around town selling ice cream for less than a week, under business name Nana’s Cream Freeze. She said the truck, coloured a bright purple with lime-green rims and covered in multi-coloured handprints, had been turning heads. “My first day out I had someone say to me it was all over Facebook that there was a purple truck in town! “I couldn’t believe the response!” Robyn grew up in Blenheim and moved back 11 months ago to be closer to her daughter and grandson, after spending 28 years in Christchurch. She said she wanted to try something a bit different after she managed the electricians at a building company during the earthquakes.

“To be honest I wanted something for myself - with ice cream you can work your own hours, and get your own gigs. “It feels great - it’s a good sensation, going out there and pleasing people.” She saw the truck on TradeMe and went back to Christchurch to try it out. “I had an absolute ball!” she said. Robyn said the process of making the ice
cream was more complicated than people realised. “It’s all timing. You’ve got to mix it right, and you have to be spot-on with the cleaning!” She said the truck would retain its paintjob, with the only change from when she bought the truck being the “Nana’s Cream Freeze” emblazoned on the side.

Artist inspired by faces By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim woman Jana Black is young and extremely talented when it comes to putting brush to canvas, something that was revealed to the public at the recent Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards. Jana entered the annual competition for the first time this year with her painting ‘John Doe’, portraying the black and white image of a homeless man. The painting made it to the final 63 and is currently being exhibited at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery. Jana said she is inspired by faces and often paints portraits of well known people including deceased rapper 2Pac and former All Black Jonah Lomu. “I often search for faces on the internet for inspiration and I love painting from photographs,” she said. Jana, who works part time in retail spends her free time painting, but admits she does it for the enjoyment more than to make a living. “I don’t want to lose the passion for painting by being pressured to make money, I just do it when I feel inspired,” she said. It was Jana’s grandfather John who encouraged Jana to paint by handing her some canvases, and her mother Julie who she said

Couple heartbroken by dog’s disappearance By Kristy Martin An Anakiwa couple hold grave fears for their beloved dog Bunny, missing since May 11 after disappearing from the family home. The German shorthaired pointer and her Vizsla companion, Mertz, went missing on the same day and Mertz returned home five days later in poor health. He was thin, exhausted, dehydrated and had sore legs. “We are reasonably sure he’s come a long way and he’s come from the bush,” owner Karen Barker said. “By the look of the dog’s legs we don’t think he’s been walking on the road.” Ms Barker and husband Richard, who live in a large property that backs onto bushland, have had six-year-old Bunny since she was a Karen Barker with her dog Bunny, who has been pup, but only took in seven-year-old Mertz five months ago. missing since May 11. “They’ve been great friends, so it’s a concern that he’s left her. “One of our thoughts was that if she’s got herself injured or died in the bush he’s stayed with her and then come home. “But we are (also) concerned that someone has taken Bunny because she’s very goodlooking.” Karen said it was unusual for the dogs to wander off. “We’ve got a fenced property but they’ve possibly smelt a pig or a possum and leapt over the fence. “They aren’t pig dogs, which can go away for three weeks at a time, they are dozy family pets.” The couple wanted to thank friends, local landowners and hunters, who had all selflessly joined their desperate search. “We will keep looking,” Karen vowed.
FLIGHTS INCREASED More than 40,000 extra seats will become available on trans-Tasman services into Christchurch next summer. Christchurch Airport has announced a 13 per cent increase in capacity on flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne - a total of 43,000 seats. Airport management said the move came in response to demand.
LOG TRUCK LOSES LOAD A logging truck towing a full trailer of logs lost its load after failing to negotiate a moderate bend on Monday. The trailer drifted into a ditch and tipped onto its side, spilling the load, Blenheim police said. The driver brought the truck under control after swerving on the incorrect side of the road and dragging the upturned trailer along the road. No other vehicles were involved and no one was injured.

COMPUTER CLASSES Next week, two computer classes will be held at the Blenheim Library. An email class will be held on Tuesday, May 27, from 9am, with a computer basics class on Thursday, May 29, from 6:30pm. Classes will be held each week until the start of July. ROBINSON WINS Ma rlborough compa ny Robinson Construction has won the retail project category at the Registered Master Builders commercial project awards. They won their award for their work at Pak’n Save Blenheim. Robinson also won a silver award for the Rangitane Cultural Centre in Grovetown, under the tourism and leisure project category. The awards were announced in Auckland on Friday night.

By Adam Poulopoulos The retail section of Bella Donna Lingerie will be closing their doors on Saturday, June 7, a year after moving to their Maxwell Road site. Owner Carolyn Orchard said she thought moving from Market Street would be a help. “I thought moving would be the answer, but unfortunately while the foot traffic increased, the sales did not.” Carolyn has tried hard to remain open, but a variety of factors have led her to close the store. “Business hasn’t improved due to the heavy competition from other stores, and the increased stock quantities now in place means I can’t do smaller orders,” she said. Carolyn and employee Erica Sprosen said they were thankful for the support they had received. “There are so many special
people we have got to know and will miss them all terribly.” While the shop closes, the mastectomy part of the store will remain open as an at-home or mobile service. Carolyn said it was important to keep that side of the business open. “There is a high customer base in Marlborough. If I’m not there, the ladies would have to travel out of town for the service.” She said the Ministry of Health subsidy covered the cost of a prosthesis and mastectomy bras, but not accommodation or travel fees.” Carolyn will continue to look after existing mastectomy customers, while stock in the store has been reduced to half price or less. Renwick cafe not for sale By Celeste Lodewyk Owners of the 3 Bears Cafe in Renwick Heike and Paul Sherwood wish to clear up any misunderstandings that their business is for sale. The couple has owned the cafe business for two years, but the land and building is leased from Rata Harper. The land and building is currently being advertised for sale, but Heike wanted to reassure their customers and the community that the business is not for sale as well. “We have had customers coming in asking why we are selling, but we are definitely not going anywhere,” she said. Hugh Steadman of Prenzel, Premium Game’s Allan Spencer and Omega Seafood marketing manager Jo O’Connell celebrate, as the three companies prepare to sell together out of Prenzel’s Riverlands premises. The three announced the arrangement at the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce’s small business group meeting, held at Prenzel on Tuesday night. Mr Steadman said it was a chance to revitalise the premises.
“We’ve had the tasting room for a very long time, but it has been underutilised. Most of our sales went through Vines Village.” Mr Steadman said the store was making about $500,000 in sales during the days of fast ferries, but it became non-viable. “On State Highway 1 it’s a bit of a tourist wilderness, so we’re going to try and change that.” The new products, plus Prenzel’s products, are available at 15 Sheffield Street now.
A new partnership between Air New Zealand and New Zealand Winegrowers to promote wine tourism to international visitors is expected to have huge benefits for Marlborough. The airline and the national wine industry body have committed to working together on a range of initiatives to promote New Zealand wine in both North America and Asia. Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston said this was a great opportunity for Marlborough. “Thirteen per cent of all international holiday travellers visit a winery or participate in wine tourism activities annually, and Marlborough is their number one destination,” she said. “This provides a valuable opportunity for us as Destination Marlborough to leverage the significant investment of these international agencies to tell Mar-
lborough’s story and grow our international visitation.” Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens also hailed the move a win for Marlborough, which was already the most visited wine region in New Zealand. “We need to support these statistics in our region with more visibility that we are a world class wine region through signage and even making wine tourism and our wine story a part of the new Marlborough airport refit,” he said. “What I particularly like about the MoU between Air New Zealand and New Zealand Winegrowers is that there will be more investment in bringing key people to our region. “Marlborough has plenty to offer the food and wine media and we need to showcase this on the global stage. “Doing this well has a multiplier effect and helps open new markets.”

Music students honoured Two talented teens have received the Queen Elizabeth II Music Fund Award from Marlborough District Council, a grant that will allow them to continue their musical training. Former Marlborough Girls’ College student Lee Stuart (pictured) completed her secondary schooling last year with a string of awards recognising her cultural contribution to the school. Beginning guitar and piano lessons at an early age, Lee also began singing lessons at age 14, achieving with distinction at Grade VII through the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Lee has seen success over four years as a competitor at Marlborough Rockquest, has performed at the Picton Foreshore New Year’s event, the Picton Maritime Festival, the Marlborough A&P Show and, last year, at the Jazz at the Boathouse concert. Lee is currently studying for a Bachelor of Music at Victoria University in Wellington.
She said it was an honour to receive the award alongside Blenheim home-schooled student Kimberly Jones. Kimberly has been playing the piano since the age of nine, passing every exam she ever sat with distinction. Her latest achievement was Grade VIII piano in the Trinity College exams; another pass with distinction after just four months’ preparation. Later this year Kimberly will be sitting her ACTL Principles of Teaching Diploma through Trinity College of Music and in 2015 she is planning to embark on teacher training at the University of Canterbury. The awards were presented by Marlborough Mayor A l ist a i r Sowman at the council chambers.

through a new Facebook page where I have already received a birthday party booking, but if anyone else has ideas for what we can do to use this facility to its full potential, please contact me,” she said. CHEESECAKE BROWNIE Ingredients: 200g dark chocolate, chopped 150g unsalted butter, chopped 1 cup caster sugar 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 1/4 cups plain flour 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/2 tsp baking powder Ice-cream to serve Cream Cheese mixture: 250g block cream cheese, chopped at room temp 1/3 cup caster sugar 1 egg
Instructions: 1. Grease a 19cm x 30cm lamington pan. Line base and sides with baking paper, extending paper 4cm above pan edges.
2. Stir chocolate and butter in a medium saucepan over a low heat until smooth. Transfer to a large bowl. Cool slightly. 3. Whisk sugar and eggs into chocolate mixture until combined. Add combined sifted flour, cocoa and baking powder. Stir until smooth. Spread evenly into prepared pan. 4. To make cream cheese mixture, beat cream cheese and sugar in a small bowl of an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in egg until combined. Drop spoonfuls of mixture over chocolate layer in pan. Using a fork, swirl mixtures together to create a marbled effect. 5. Cook in a moderately slow oven (160deg C) for about 40 mins or until a skewer inserted into centre comes out clean. Cool in pan. 6. Cut brownies into squares. Serve with ice-cream!

Horse show success By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough’s young horses got put through their paces at the Blenheim Riding School last Saturday. Forty horses from as far away as Ashburton attended the Marlborough Breeders Youngstock Show, the first time it has been held in Marlborough since 2006. Horses had to be three years old or under to be eligible for the event. Organising committee mem-
ber Bronwyn Wadsworth said she was delighted with the turnout. “We didn’t realise there were so many people out there with young horses who were prepared to bring them! “They’re all very well turnedout - people have put a lot of work into how they look. “There have been no horses on their back legs - they’ve all been very well-behaved.” Both adults and children attended the event.
Wairau Hospital’s telephone system has been upgraded to replace a 20-year-old private automated branch exchange. The replacement PABX is an IP (Internet Protocol) system which now operates both IP and analogue phones. “There were issues with our ageing phone system earlier in the year,” general manager IT and Infrastructure Patrick Ng said. “Limitations of our older PABX telephony system included the ability to source spare parts, and compatibility with our more modern, IP phones. “The newer system is more robust, has greater capacity and will provide us with more capability for the future.” The transfer to the new system was successful with the first part completed on Friday night from 7pm to 8.30pm, during which cellphones were used to communicate between departments and with Nelson Hospital. On Saturday the major change over of 450 analogue phones from one PABX to another was accomplished over a period of twelve hours.

Exhaust specialist Murray’s Muffler Service By Celeste Lodewyk When it comes to exhausts there is one business that has made it their specialty Murray’s Muffler Service. The business have been family owned in Marlborough for over 30 years, first being established by John Murray and later taken over by his son Andy. John first opened the business in the early 80’s at the site where Burger King now stands. At the time Andy had intentions to become an electronics engineer but after spending some time working for his parents after leaving school, he never left. The father and son worked side by side until John decided to retire. “He went away whitebaiting and decided not to come back,” Andy laughed. Andy and his wife Polly took ownership in 1998 and after owning it for a year, an opportunity came along to purchase a new
building on Opawa Street. “It seemed more viable to purchase rather than rent, so in 2009 we moved and have been really happy with the premises since,” he said. Murray’s Muffler Service still specialises in all exhaust work, bending all their own pipes up, modifying exhausts for more power and fuel economy, motorcycle exhausts as well as a lot of custom work. “We work on all makes and models of vehicles, from Fiat Bambinos to boats and aircraft - even Ferraris,” he said. Murray’s Muffler Service has a large workshop space so can also accommodate large vehicles and trucks. The business is open from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and welcomes all enquiries. Shanghai to London Noeline and Ron Stewart are currently somewhere between Shanghai and London driving a 1967 Peugeot as part of a classic car rally. Here’s a few words from Noeline…
The beginning….. Months of planning and preparing and here we are in Shanghai ready to start. We left Blenheim on Sunday 4th May and boarded the Air New Zealand flight to Shanghai. Have to say that Air NZ planes are definitely getting older – looking forward to the new ‘Dreamliner’!!! Arriving in Shanghai was amazing. The city is simply huge. The day is clear of smog. Arrive at the hotel and a debriefing. In total there are 27 travellers and 13 cars. There is an air of anticipation. The traffic is like you wouldn't believe and they drive on the right and of course all our cars steer on the right. So introductions all round, meet the translator – Charlie, lunch, rooms available to check in and then off to the Traffic Police Station for the drivers’ test and license. International or national licenses mean nothing – this is China.
This is an interesting process – many forms to be completed which we don't understand. Anyway, line up and have those stamped, then off to have a hearing test, more stamps, then look at the dots and pick the colours/ shapes – more stamps, then an eye test – more stamps, then blood pressure test – more stamps, then to the admin office to ensure all the stamps are there – more stamps, then finally downstairs where the forms were stamped again for completion. At no stage is there ever any reference to driving or road skills/ competence. So after 12 hours flying, trying to remain focused, we have ‘passed’ the license, but the machine is broken down – so no license issued today. (Interestingly in China once you reach 70, you cannot get a license!) After a day of R and R, the next morning we headed to the port to get the cars. Believing that the agents for the
organisers had followed all the protocols, we manage to get into the port area. That was a mistake. We were quickly ‘exported’ out and so the longest day ever started. Most of the team were confined to the bus, and three of us including yours truly along with the translator were allowed back in. We found the cars, all intact and along with the Chinese port workers we started to unpack them. Most were ok but some had flat batteries and the Peugeot had a flat front tyre. But we got them all out of the containers and lined up. The next challenge was the Authorities. They do follow the rule book. Despite following all paper work being done, they simply don't understand Classic Cars. They’ve never seen any. So the normal inspection and description ‘questions and answers’ don't quite follow their rule book. Examples are a Volvo Amazon

is the official name. The word ‘Amazon’ doesn't appear on the car – fail!! Ford Cortinas generally have a chassis and engine number the same – that apparently is impossible - fail!! Each number has to be found for the chassis and engine and then someone comes along and takes a stencilled copy of each number – if the number for some design reason is not accessible for that process – fail. By now there are 23 Inspectors involved from three different Customs departments. In addition all the port workers are
there so all up around 40 people all over the place. Anyway the upshot was about 10 fails so they failed the lot and back into the containers!! That was the end of that and back into the bus and back to the hotel!!! So it is now Thursday and at last we have our licenses and number plates but only for 10 of the 13 cars. 3 have to go for a WOF. So we will all go in convoy to the testing station and then hopefully onward to start the tour…… Post script. The cars all eventually set off – another instalment coming soon!

Pig Hunt Action on Chilean approaches Needle Grass A new community group has formed in Marlborough, in the hope of eradicating Chilean Needle Grass from the area. The Chilean Needle Grass Action Group formed after a community meeting held in Seddon in February. The group aims to create eradication plans and promote awareness of the pest, with a view to removing it by 2030. CNGAG chairperson Warwick Lissaman (pictured), who farms an Awatere property, said the focus had shifted from a containment policy to full eradication. No longer will turning a blind eye to Chilean Needle Grass be acceptable within Marlborough. As community members we all have a responsibility to report sightings and eliminate our potential to spread this pest plant, and property owners have the additional responsibility of ensuring known areas are destroyed each year. In the group, several of the landowners are experienced in using Taskforce, a new chemical tool showing promise in helping to kill

It will be a hard graft but with the motivation and drive coming from the community, everyone can benefit from it."
Farmers urged to vote on wool levy Federated Farmers has welcomed the opportunity wool growers will have to vote on whether to reinstate a levy on wool. The Wool Producers Referendum is set to take place on October 10 and will ask sheep farmers to fund a new industry body by approving a levy of between 2 and 5 cents for each kilogram of greasy or slipe wool at the first point of sale. Federated Farmers urged its members to engage in the process, to talk with the Wool Levy Group
and above all, to vote. “Wool has been the quiet export achiever worth $700 million to New Zealand in 2013,” says Jeanette Maxwell, Federated Farmers Meat & Fibre chairperson.

Last week saw the continuation of the worst kind of trend for Portuguese football powerhouse Benfica. The team lost their eighth successive decider in a European competition, going down to Sevilla in the Europa League Final. It has now been 52 years since Benfica last won a European trophy, despite the team winning several Portuguese titles in the same period. Many fans see late managerial legend Bela Guttman at the root of the problem. Guttman won back-to-back European championships in the ‘60s, but walked out straight afterwards when club chiefs refused his request for a pay rise.
SWIMMING The Blenheim Swimming Club will be hosting ‘Dive Right In’ this weekend. The event is on Sunday, May 25, from 5-6pm at Stadium 2000. Races, relays and other games will be held. All are welcome to attend.
FOOTBALL The Marlborough Mariners development side crushed Wakefield 10-1 at A&P Park on Saturday. Striker Carl Connor-McClean scored a hat-trick, with Jordy Columbus and Taine Swete each getting two. Mike Sutherland, Cailin Thompson and Lukas Simpson also scored. The result lifted the Mariners up one place to fourth in their division. They play fifth-placed FC Nelson in Nelson tomorrow.

Upon leaving, Guttman is alleged to have said “Not in a hundred years from now will Benfica ever be European champions.” Benfica’s greatest ever player, Eusebio, is even said to have prayed for the end of the curse at Guttman’s headstone when he died in 1981. Curses have also befallen several other sporting teams. The Boston Red Sox baseball team failed to win the World Series for a long time after selling superstar Babe ‘The Bambino’ Ruth to the Yankees in 1918. The Curse of The Bambino was lifted in 2004 when they won the World Series. English football side Birmingham City was cursed when
they moved their stadium to St Andrew’s, land being used by Romani Gypsies, from Muntz Street in 1906. The Gypsies placed a 100year hex on the club when they were removed, and every time Birmingham began to play badly, they took drastic measures to banish the curse. They hung crucifixes from the floodlights, dyed the soles of the players’ boots red and urinated in all four corners of the pitch, none of which seemed to work until the curse was lifted on Boxing Day 2006. Guess Benfica have 48 years to wait then.
By Adam Poulopoulos It was a case of persistence paying off for a local teenager who has just won New Zealand’s most prestigious young driver development programme. Brook Reeve, 17, won the SpeedSport Scholarship after the two-day evaluation at Manfeild race circuit, near Feilding, last weekend. Blenheim-raised but now studying motorsport at UCOL in Palmerston North, Reeve became the first South Islander to win the scholarship in its 14-year history. He receives a fully-funded season racing a Formula First car in the New Zealand Championship series, a personalised race suit and other equipment for winning the title. He said he was delighted to be named the winner.
PIGEONS Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club held two races from Christchurch on Saturday. A distance of 240 km the first race birds at 9am. With the fine weather the first birds were homing in a little over 3 hours flying. First was Alister Cooper of Renwick whose chequer hen flew at a velocity of 1249.81 meters per minute, 2nd place to Donald Morrison 1237.28 mpm and 3rd to club president Carl Kirkwood’s in 1235.14mpm. He said he went away to make some improvements off the track ahead of last weekend’s edition. “It was very competitive last year. All the lap times were close. “I wasn’t as good as speaking to the judges, so I worked on that and brought it to the table. “Off the track you have to do interviews and stuff, and it’s probably just as important as the racing.” Reeve gets the chance to race his new car when he starts his Scholarship Year at the first round of the Manfeild Winter Series on June 7 and 8. The New Zealand Championship Series gets under way in October.
